The fresh Wide-Track Pontiacs for 1963 were definitive trendsetters. Vertically stacked headlamps provided an aggressive visage, featuring a forward-jutting brow over each pair, with the trademark split grille between them.
New, straighter A-pillars were thoroughly modern. More pronounced "Coke bottle" side styling, with its pinch just after the door, enhanced the muscular appearance, and the judicious use of bright trim infused class through understatement. Each of these styling cues would be employed on various other brands in the years that followed.
Beneath the hood, power to back up the daring body styling was available for the asking. Via variations in carburetion, compression, cam and ignition timing, exhaust systems, transmission type and rear gearing, Pontiac excelled in dialing in powertrain packages to suit various driver needs.
Choices ranged from the 215-hp, 389-cu.in. with a three-speed manual trans and a 2.56:1 rear for the thrifty-minded, to an underrated 410-hp dual-quad 421-cu.in. Super-Duty with a four-speed and 4.30:1 gears for select racers. Either could be ordered in the Catalina two-door hardtop
All 389 engines feature a 4.0625 x 3.75-inch bore and stroke and the 421s measure 4.09375 x 4.00-inch. Their blocks are cast iron; the 389 has 3.00-inch mains with two-bolt caps, while the 421 uses 3.25-inch mains with four-bolt caps. The crank is Arma-Steel and while the rods in the 389 are cast Arma-Steel, those in the 421 are forged steel. Pistons are flat-tops with valve reliefs and are made from aluminum alloy. The compression ratio is 10.25:1 in the 389s and 421 A, and 10.75:1 in the 421 HOs.
